Greenville, Del. —

Ninety tennis players will hit the courts for a good cause on Oct. 5 during the fourth annual Bruce Fellows Tennis Benefit.

The event is a fundraiser for Fellows, a former vascular surgeon at Christiana Hospital who was paralyzed from the neck down in a bicycle accident near Bethany Beach in 2005.

The tennis benefit has raised $35,000 over the past three years, some of which was put toward innovative stem cell surgery Fellows received last year. The surgery, developed by neurosurgeons in Portugal, has helped Fellows recover some muscle strength, though the process takes effect slowly.

In addition to supporting Fellows, the benefit will raise money for Delaware’s chapter of ThinkFirst, a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to injury prevention.

The event has grown since it started three years ago and 30 more players signed up for this year’s benefit than last year. Because of the increase, the benefit will be held on the tennis courts at the Greenville Country Club, Wilmington Country Club and DuPont Country Club.
